How would you say that sacrifice is portrayed in this series?

Because there seem to be quite a few differing accounts. On the one hand, there's Ahiru's quest to restore Mytho's heart shards, which is in effect an attempt to reverse a sacrifice that he once made. And there's also ( Does Episode 13 still count as a spoiler? What the hell, I'll cut it anyway. )

So what's the message here? What is the series telling us about when sacrifice is a good thing, and when it's... not so good?
