I always thought Mytho returned to the story at the end of the series, taking Rue with him. (Which, if you think about it, doesn't quite fit with the theme of returning to your real self. Rue didn't come out of the book originally, so to return to her real self, how could she be taken into the book?)
However, Fakir says in the last episode that Mytho will be able to live freely. That almost sounds like it means Mytho won't have to live in the story, but can find a new life as a real person in the real world.
Rereading the post-series episode thing's transcription, though, gives me the impression that indeed, Mytho and Rue went to the story to live. (And that's actually pretty depressing, as it also sounded like it was another time period and Mytho and Fakir never got to see each other anymore. Too sad. XD; )
What is your interpretation of Fakir's line in general, as well as how it meshes with the post-series thing? Or do you not consider the post-series thing canon? (I myself am kind of on the fence about it. Since it was written by Ikuko Itoh, I feel like I should accept it as canon, and yet ... **shrugs helplessly.**)
